Emergency Ventilation Equipment
Ambu-Bag on back of cart/machine
LMA, other adjuncts
Low Pressure System
Negative Pressure Test (especially Ohmeda)
- test with power off
- test with each vaporizer open
Turn on machine
High Pressure System
Check levels in O2 and other tanks
- make sure you reclose the valves or you will bleed the
tanks dry
- “righty
tighty, lefty loosey”
Check pressure levels on line-sources
Calibrate Oxygen Sensor
Check Flow Sensors (Ohmeda only)
Breathing System
Positive Pressure Test
-Set gas flows to minimum
-close APL valve
-occlude Y-piece
- pressurize to at least 30cm H2O
- pressure should hold at 30 for 10 sec with less than
500cc flow
Scavenging System
Pressurize circuit (as above); open APL valve; ensure pressure goes to zero
Ventilation System -Place reservoir bag on Y-piece
-turn APL to
“auto”
-turn on ventilator (and flush with O2)
-check that bellows return to top with each breach
-check that inspiratory and expiratory valves work
Check vaporizer levels
Monitors
-turn on!
-make sure ETCO2
is “awake”
Suction
Intubation Supplies
- make sure laryngoscope of choice has a working light
- check balloon on ETT of choice
- stylettes, oral airways, extra tubes, spare laryngoscope
Drugs
sedative, narcotic, hypnotic, paralytic
